Why Online Reviews Are Your Most Powerful Sales Tool
Before a customer ever calls you, they've already read your reviews. Studies show that 93% of consumers say online reviews influence their purchase decisions, and 87% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses.
For small businesses, a strong review profile on Google, Yelp, and Facebook is the difference between a phone that rings and one that doesn't.
The Review Flywheel
At Consult Rushworth, we use what we call the Review Flywheel — a simple, repeatable system for consistently generating 5-star reviews:
- 1.Deliver exceptional service (table stakes)
- 2.Ask at the right moment (immediately after a positive experience)
- 3.Make it easy (send a direct link to your Google review page)
- 4.Respond to every review (shows you're engaged and builds trust)
- 5.Showcase reviews (feature them on your website and social media)
- 1.Search for your business on Google
- 2.Click "Get more reviews" in your Business Profile
- 3.Copy the short URL Google provides
- 4.Use this link in all your review requests
How to Ask for Reviews Without Being Pushy
The biggest mistake business owners make is either never asking, or asking in a way that feels transactional. The right approach:
In person: "We really appreciate your business. If you had a great experience today, it would mean a lot to us if you left us a quick Google review. I can text you the link right now."
Via email: Send a follow-up email 24–48 hours after a service with a single, clear CTA: "How did we do? If you're happy with your experience, please leave us a review — it takes less than 2 minutes and helps our small business tremendously."
Via SMS: A simple text with a direct link converts at 2–3x the rate of email.
Getting Your Google Review Link
Responding to Reviews
Positive reviews: Thank the reviewer by name, mention a specific detail from their review, and invite them back. This shows future customers you're attentive and genuine.
Negative reviews: Respond within 24 hours. Acknowledge the issue, apologize without admitting fault, and offer to resolve it offline. Never argue. A well-handled negative review can actually build more trust than a perfect score.
The Impact on Local SEO
Google uses review quantity, quality, and recency as ranking signals for local search. Businesses with 50+ reviews and a 4.5+ star rating consistently outrank competitors in the local "3-pack" — the three businesses shown prominently in local search results.
